About This Project
We built a custom cedar A-frame gazebo tied into the house, next to a new shed-roof section, and wrapped both in a composite-roof screen enclosure with our expanded-view upgrade.
Wood ceilings run across the gazebo, the shed roof and the existing lanai, so the whole space reads as one room. New pavers continue from the existing lanai out to a spot built for the family's hot tub.
What we built
- A custom cedar A-frame gazebo tied into the house
- A shed-roof section alongside it
- Wood ceilings across the gazebo, the shed roof and the existing lanai
- A composite-roof screen enclosure with our expanded-view upgrade
- New pavers and steps
- A pad for the family's hot tub

A-Frame Gazebos and Screen Rooms: A General Guide
Mixing roof shapes
Pairing a tall A-frame with a lower shed (single-slope) roof lets you put height over the main gathering spot and keep a lower line where the roof meets the house or windows. Carrying the same ceiling finish across both makes them read as one room.
Any roof over a patio can cut the daylight reaching nearby windows, but daylighting research from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory shows taller, sloped ceilings spread light deeper, so a raised, pitched A-frame ceiling can keep more daylight reaching the house.
Screens, bugs and breeze
The CDC recommends screens on windows and doors and repairing any holes to keep mosquitoes outdoors, which is one reason screened lanais are so popular in Florida.
Research in the Journal of Medical Entomology found that fan-generated wind strongly reduced mosquito catches, mainly by diluting the carbon dioxide and scents that draw them in, so a ceiling fan can help. Fans cool people, not rooms: the breeze creates a wind-chill effect, according to ENERGY STAR.
Hot tubs under a roof
A filled hot tub is heavy, so it needs a pad built for it, and it needs a dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Plan its spot, the access path and the drainage before the pavers go down.
Building in St. Johns
Most communities in St. Johns have an HOA with architectural review. See our St. Johns page for HOA and permit details in the area.
Florida's summer thunderstorms are a reason to know the CDC's rule: open structures like gazebos and porches don't protect you from lightning, so go indoors when thunder roars.
