Pergola vs. Gazebo

Open top or solid roof? The difference between a pergola and a gazebo.

The simplest way to tell them apart: a pergola has an open slatted or louvered top, and a gazebo has a solid roof. Both can be attached or freestanding, and both can be designed to match your home.

Pergola vs. Gazebo

Pergola Gazebo
Roof Open slatted or louvered Solid roof: flat, shed-style or A-frame
Rain Open pergolas don't keep rain off Keeps rain off
Ceiling Open to the sky Finished ceiling for fans, lights and a TV
Feel Airy, filtered light A true outdoor room
Permits Often Almost always

By the dictionary definition, a pergola is an open roof of girders and cross rafters on posts, Merriam-Webster notes, which is why it filters sunlight instead of blocking it.

Which Is Right for You?

If you want an open feel and filtered shade, a pergola. If you want to sit out in the rain with a fan overhead and a TV on the wall, a gazebo. Many clients start with one and switch after seeing both in AutoCAD.

Real example: one Pace Island family planned a pergola and switched to a gazebo during the project.

Merriam-Webster defines a gazebo as a roofed structure, usually freestanding and usually open on the sides, and lists pavilion as a synonym.
