Pergola vs. Patio Cover at a Glance

Pergola Patio cover
Roof Open slats or louvers Solid roof
Shade Filtered Full
Rain Doesn't keep rain off (louvered pergolas can) Keeps rain off
Feel Open, airy A true outdoor room
Fans, lights, TV Possible, with planning Easy to add under a finished ceiling
Permits & HOA Often needed Almost always needed

The more open sky you can see through a pergola's top, the more indirect UV reaches you, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, so slat spacing changes the quality of the shade.

Which One Fits You?

Choose a pergola if you want filtered light over a dining area or pool edge and an open look. Choose a patio cover if you want to sit outside through summer storms, add a TV and fans, or extend the house. Many backyards use both. We'll recommend based on how you use the space.

The EPA reports that shaded surfaces can be 20 to 45°F cooler than the peak temperatures of unshaded materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pergola vs. patio cover: which is better? A pergola gives filtered shade and an open feel. A solid patio cover gives full shade and rain protection. Louvered pergolas sit in between. We'll recommend based on how you use the space.

Is a covered patio worth it? For Florida living, a covered patio adds usable space through sun and rain and is one of the most-used rooms of the home. Value depends on design and quality.

Can you screen in a pergola or patio cover? Often, yes, depending on the structure. We'll tell you what works best for your design during your consultation.
