Pergola vs. Gazebo vs. Pavilion
| Pergola | Gazebo | Pavilion | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roof | Open slatted or louvered top | Solid roof (flat, shed-style or A-frame) | Solid roof |
| Typical placement | Attached or freestanding | Freestanding or attached to the house | Usually freestanding |
| Shade & rain | Filtered shade | Full shade and rain cover | Full shade and rain cover |
| Best for | Dining, pool edge, open feel | An outdoor room with a ceiling, fans, a TV and a fireplace | A gathering spot away from the house, over a kitchen or seating |
Merriam-Webster describes a pergola as posts and beams holding up an open roof of girders and cross rafters, so it filters the sun rather than blocking it completely.
How to Choose
If you want an open, airy feel, start with a pergola. If you want a room you can use in the rain, with a ceiling for fans and lights, choose a gazebo. If the shade belongs out in the yard, by the pool or over an outdoor kitchen, a pavilion is often the answer.
The dictionary calls a gazebo a roofed structure that is usually freestanding and usually open on the sides; Merriam-Webster even lists pavilion as a synonym.
Merriam-Webster describes a pavilion as an open, sometimes ornamental structure in a garden, park or place of recreation that is used for entertainment or shelter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Pergola vs. gazebo: what's the difference? A pergola has an open or louvered top. A gazebo has a solid roof. Both can be designed to match your home.
Pergola vs. patio cover: which is better? A pergola gives filtered shade and an open feel. A solid patio cover gives full shade and rain protection. Louvered pergolas sit in between. We'll recommend based on how you use the space.
Can you build a pergola over a pool or spa? Yes. Pergolas and covers over pools and spas are a favorite way to add shade. We plan them around your pool layout and equipment.
