Screened Porch vs. Pergola

Bug-free room or open-air shade? How a screened porch compares to a pergola.

A screened porch and a pergola both make the backyard more usable, but one keeps bugs out and the other keeps the sky open. Here's how to decide.

Screened Porch vs. Pergola

Screened porch / screened patio Pergola
Bugs Keeps them out Doesn't
Rain Covered porches keep rain off Open slats don't
Feel An outdoor room Open, airy
Views Screens soften the view slightly Unobstructed
Permits & HOA Usually needed Often needed

Keeping mosquitoes out starts with intact screens: the CDC recommends using screens and repairing any holes in them.

Or Both

Many Florida backyards combine them: a covered, screened area by the house and a pergola beyond it over the dining area or fire pit. We design both together in AutoCAD so they look like one plan.

Merriam-Webster describes a pergola as posts and beams holding up an open roof of girders and cross rafters, so it filters the sun rather than blocking it completely.
