What a Lanai Extension Includes

A lanai extension carries your existing covered area out into the yard. The new roof is tied into your home and finished to match, and the floor extends with pavers, travertine or marble. Many clients add a screen enclosure, an outdoor kitchen, a fireplace or a TV wall at the same time.

Extension Options

  • Cedar roof extensions tied into the current roof and finished to match the house.

  • Screen enclosures around the new and existing lanai, with our expanded-view upgrade.

  • Floors: paver, travertine or marble extensions over the old concrete and out into the yard.

  • Raised patios: retaining walls where the yard sits lower than the house.

  • Finishes: tongue-and-groove ceilings, matched shingles, fans, lighting and TV walls.

Materials

Cedar framing built on site, roofing and posts finished to match the house, and engineered connections. Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents.

If you mainly want to extend an open patio and add a cover, see our Covered Patio Extension page.

Lanai is a Hawaiian word for a roofed porch or veranda, and Merriam-Webster dates its first known use in English to 1823.

In Hawaii, a covered porch is simply called a lanai, Merriam-Webster notes, and the word has become a common term for covered outdoor living spaces.

  • In-home design visit. Amany comes to your home for an in-person walkthrough, so we look at the project together where you're most comfortable, finalize the details and choose your colors and finishes.

Permits and HOA approval

A roof extension tied into your house is a permitted structure, and most HOAs require architectural approval first. Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents. We prepare your HOA/ARB package with a scaled site plan, elevations, materials and 3D renderings, pull the permits and pass the inspections.
