Do I Need a Permit for a Screen Enclosure in Florida?

New screen enclosures in Florida generally need a permit. Here's what to know.

New screen enclosures and screen rooms in Florida generally require a building permit, because they have to meet the state's wind requirements. Replacing screens alone may be different. Here's how it usually works in Northeast Florida.

What's Usually Permitted

  • New screen enclosures around a patio or pool.
  • Screen rooms and screened porches.
  • Enlarging or structurally changing an existing enclosure.

Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents.

The Florida Building Code has its own section for screen enclosures, and it requires their structural members to be designed for wind from two directions.

Under the Florida Building Code, removable vinyl, glass or acrylic panels in a screen enclosure must carry a label saying they have to come down above a set wind speed.

By County

See our guides for Duval County, St. Johns County, Clay County and Nassau County. HOA approval for frame and screen colors is a separate step.
