Building a Fire Area in Marsh Landing

  • Built-in bench. A curved or straight bench that wraps the fire.

  • Sunken fire areas. A step down to the fire with benches makes a cozy room in the yard.

  • Lighting around it. Step and seat-wall lights for the walk back to the house.

  • Gas fire pit. Starts with a switch and has no smoke. Gas connections by our licensed trade partners.

Before leaving a fire, NFPA advises dousing it with water and making sure the area is cool to the touch.

Planning a fire pit in Marsh Landing

Marsh Landing sits along the marsh and the Intracoastal Waterway, and the optional Marsh Landing Country Club is inside the gates. Many Marsh Landing homes are established, so new outdoor rooms are designed to match the existing roof and trim. Ocean breezes affect a flame, so the fire feature is placed where the wind won't blow smoke or flame into the seating.

Some families want the fire close to the kitchen; others want it out in the yard as a destination. We show both options in AutoCAD. Before we draw a fire pit in Marsh Landing, we check how seating wraps the fire, the path back to the house and gas or wood, and what that means for placement.

NAHB lists outdoor kitchens and outdoor fireplaces among the home features that have grown most in popularity over the past ten years.

Approvals and Permits in Marsh Landing

Marsh Landing reviews additions for placement, materials and colors, and we coordinate the submission with you. For a fire pit, review boards commonly look at the fuel type, the materials and its location on the lot. Confirm current guidelines with your association.

Marsh Landing homes are permitted by St. Johns County. The County requires a building permit for most improvements and, in most cases, a clearance sheet before it accepts the application, and registered architectural review associations are notified automatically when exterior work is filed. Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents.
