Can I Extend My Concrete Patio? Options for New Homes

Yes, you can usually extend a concrete patio. Here are the options that work best on new homes.

Most new homes come with a small concrete slab under the builder lanai. You can almost always extend it, and how you do it affects the look, the cost drivers and what you can build on top later.

Options for Extending a Concrete Patio

  • Pavers beside the slab. Extend with pavers and border the transition so old and new look intentional.
  • Pavers over the slab. Where the height works, pavers can cover the existing slab for one continuous surface.
  • Natural stone. Stone patios for a more formal look, matched to your home.
  • Raised patio with seat walls. On sloped lots, a raised patio with a seat wall levels the space.
  • Plan for what goes on top. If a pergola, gazebo, kitchen or hot tub might sit on the extension, we design the base for it now.

UF/IFAS lists concrete, brick, pavers and flagstone among the floor choices for a patio.

Before You Extend

Check your HOA guidelines, since patio footprint changes are commonly reviewed. Plan power and conduit for lights, fans or a kitchen before the patio goes down. We design the extension in AutoCAD so you can see it with the rest of the backyard.

Interlocking concrete pavers can be taken up and put back using the same pavers, unlike asphalt or poured concrete, according to the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI).
