Pergolas on Pavers

Yes, a pergola can go on pavers, with the right attachment and base for the surface.

Homeowners often ask whether a pergola can sit on an existing paver patio. Usually, yes. What matters is how the posts are anchored and what's under the pavers. We design the structure and the patio together so both last.

Pergolas on Pavers: What We Look At

  • What's underneath. The base under the pavers affects how posts are anchored.
  • New or existing patio. With a new patio, we plan the post locations before the pavers go down.
  • Engineering. Permitted pergolas get their necessary engineered documents, including how they're anchored.
  • Looks. Post bases and borders that look intentional with the paver pattern.

Interlocking concrete pavers can be taken up and put back using the same pavers, unlike asphalt or poured concrete, according to the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI).

For any wood structure in Florida, UF/IFAS advises eliminating wood-to-ground contact, such as posts set directly in soil, to help reduce termite risk.
