About This Project

We extended this home's covered lanai with a cedar roof tied into the existing one, with shingles matching the house, so it looks original to the home. We handled the engineering and the permit.

A wood ceiling now runs across the extension and the existing lanai. Below it, a raised natural-stone patio, a curved seating wall and an outdoor kitchen make it a place to spend the evening.

What we built

  • A cedar lanai extension tied into the existing roof, with shingles matching the house
  • A wood ceiling across the extension and the existing lanai
  • A raised natural-stone patio
  • A curved seating wall and two columns
  • An outdoor kitchen

Extending a Covered Lanai: A General Guide

What a lanai extension involves

Lanai is a Hawaiian word for a roofed porch or veranda, and Merriam-Webster dates its first known use in English to 1823. In Florida, extending one usually means carrying the house roof farther out over the patio.

When the new roof attaches to the existing one, matching the pitch, shingles and post style is what makes it look original. A tie-in like this is structural, so expect engineered documents and a building permit.

Daylighting research from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory notes that overhangs can reduce daylight reaching a room, while taller, sloped ceilings help spread light deeper, which is why roof height and shape matter on a lanai extension.

Comfort under the new roof

Ceiling fans make a covered lanai more comfortable through a wind-chill effect, and ENERGY STAR notes they cool people, not rooms, so they're best switched off when no one is outside. ENERGY STAR recommends running ceiling fans counterclockwise in summer for a cooling breeze.

Stone, seating walls and kitchens

Natural stone and pavers both make durable patio surfaces; the choice usually comes down to look, budget and how it suits the house. A curved seating wall adds built-in seating and defines the edge of a raised patio.

NAHB lists outdoor kitchens and outdoor fireplaces among the home features that have grown most in popularity over the past ten years.

Building in Nocatee

Nocatee neighborhoods have architectural review, so plan time for approval before the permit. See our Nocatee page for HOA and permit details in the area.

The Florida Building Code uses the national ASCE 7 wind standard, so design wind speeds vary by location, and areas designated wind-borne debris regions carry added requirements. Permitted structures are designed to Florida Building Code wind requirements.
