Pergolas in St. Johns County
Custom pergolas for St. Johns County backyards, designed in person with you in AutoCAD and built and stained on site.
If your patio feels unfinished, a pergola is often the piece that pulls it together. It defines the dining or lounge area, softens the sun and gives you somewhere to hang lights and a fan. We design custom pergolas for homeowners in St. Johns County in AutoCAD with you, then build and stain them on site.

Pergola Options for St. Johns County Backyards
Attached to the house. Extends from the lanai so shade starts right at the back door.
Freestanding in the yard. Creates a destination at the far end of the patio or the lawn.
Over a dining table. Rafters sized so the table, the chairs and the walkway all fit underneath.
Lights and a fan. Wiring is hidden in the beams and planned in the AutoCAD design.
UF/IFAS lists a tree, an umbrella or a pergola as ways to get daytime shade in an outdoor living space.
What Shapes a pergola in St. Johns County
Most St. Johns County homes are in master-planned communities, so HOA review is part of nearly every project. Unincorporated St. Johns County issues a clearance sheet before it accepts a building permit application for most improvements. A pergola's open top keeps a water view intact while still giving the patio shade.
If you want shade at a certain time of day, tell us. The direction the rafters run decides when the shade lands on the patio. Before we draw a pergola in St. Johns County, we check where the posts can land on your survey, whether the patio surface can take the posts and the sun angle over the seating area.
Outdoor fans carry location ratings: damp-rated fans are meant for covered spaces protected from direct rain, while wet-rated fans can handle direct rain, such as under an open pergola.
Approvals and Permits in St. Johns County
In St. Johns County, the HOA and the county permit are separate steps, and registered associations are notified automatically when exterior work is filed. For a pergola, boards usually want to see the height, the stain color and where the posts sit relative to the setbacks. Confirm current guidelines with your association.
Homes inside the City of St. Augustine are permitted by the City, and the rest of St. Johns County by the county. We confirm your jurisdiction first. Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a pergola in St. Johns County cost?Every project gets a custom quote with an in-person AutoCAD design, and every AY Luxury Designs project has a $10,000 minimum. What drives the cost of a pergola in St. Johns County: lighting and fans; the patio underneath; the size and style; attached or freestanding; and engineering and permits. You get a fully itemized quote within 24 hours of your design consultation.
Attached or freestanding pergola: which should I pick?Attached pergolas shade the area right off the house. Freestanding ones create a spot out in the yard. Amany will sketch both in AutoCAD if you're unsure.
Will a pergola make my patio feel smaller?Usually the opposite. Because it stays open overhead, a pergola defines the space without walling it in.
Do you serve all of St. Johns County?Yes. We serve homeowners from Ponte Vedra Beach and Nocatee to RiverTown, St. Johns, World Golf Village and St. Augustine.
Does a pergola in St. Johns County go to the HOA?In most cases, yes. St. Johns County's planned communities each publish their own guidelines, so the package is built for your community, not the county. We prepare what the board asks for, and the decision is the board's, so confirm current guidelines with your association.
Who permits a pergola in St. Johns County? We file with St. Johns County, or the City of St. Augustine inside its limits, depending on your address, track the permit and schedule the inspections. Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents.
