Pergola Builder in Jacksonville, FL
Custom pergolas for Northeast Florida backyards, designed in person with you in AutoCAD. We manage every step, from permit to final walkthrough.
A pergola gives a patio shape, filtered shade and a place for lights, fans and climbing plants, without closing in the yard. AY Luxury Designs designs and builds custom pergolas for homes across Jacksonville and Northeast Florida. Every pergola is built and finished on site for your space, so it fits your patio and matches your home. You get less chores and more chill.

Pergola Options
Attached or freestanding. Attach the pergola to the house to shade a lanai or patio edge, or set it out in the yard over a dining area, hot tub or fire pit.
Lumber. We build in cedar, and we've built pergolas in cypress too, including one finished in black.
Clear or smoky roof option. Add roof panels above the rafters when you want rain protection with the open look.
Height and size. We proportion each pergola to the patio, the house and the view.
Stain. You choose the stain, and we apply it on site.
What goes with it. Paver patios, seating walls and benches, fire pits, outdoor kitchens and lighting are often part of the same design.
Want a solid roof instead? See our Gazebo Builder page. A pergola gives filtered shade; a gazebo gives a solid roof that you can tie into your house.
Merriam-Webster describes a pergola as posts and beams holding up an open roof of girders and cross rafters, so it filters the sun rather than blocking it completely.
Materials
Cedar or cypress lumber finished on site, with engineered connections where the design calls for them. Many clients pair the pergola with premium pavers, seating walls and columns.
If you like a green canopy, UF/IFAS points out that Florida vines such as crossvine or trumpet creeper can be grown on pergolas for shade.

Permits and HOA approval
Whether a pergola needs a building permit depends on its size, whether it's attached to the house and your county or city. Most HOAs require architectural approval before work starts. We confirm what your project needs, prepare a neighborhood-specific HOA/ARB package with a scaled site plan, elevations, materials and 3D renderings, and pull any required permits. Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents.
Where We Build
We build pergolas for homeowners across Northeast Florida, from RiverTown and Julington Creek Plantation to Palencia, Marsh Creek and Eagle Landing, and everywhere in between. See our pages for Ponte Vedra Beach, Nocatee, St. Johns and Fruit Cove, St. Augustine, Jacksonville Beach, Fleming Island and Orange Park.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a custom pergola cost? Every project gets a custom quote with an in-person AutoCAD design, and every AY Luxury Designs project has a $10,000 minimum. What drives the cost of a custom pergola: the size and style; attached or freestanding; the wood; a clear roof; lighting and fans; the patio underneath; and engineering and permits. You get a fully itemized quote within 24 hours of your design consultation.
Is a pergola attached to the house or freestanding? Either. An attached pergola shades the edge of your lanai or patio, and a freestanding pergola can sit over a dining area, hot tub or fire pit anywhere in the yard. We design both in AutoCAD so you can compare them.
What's the difference between a pergola and a gazebo? A pergola has an open rafter top for filtered shade, with an optional clear roof. A gazebo has a solid roof (flat, shed-style or A-frame) and can stand on its own or attach to your house. If you want full rain cover, a fan or a TV, a gazebo is usually the better fit.
Do you stain the pergola? Yes. We finish the pergola on site in the stain color you choose.
Do I need a permit or HOA approval for a pergola? Most HOAs require architectural approval first, and many pergolas need a building permit. We prepare your HOA/ARB package and pull any required permits. Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents.
How soon can my project start? It depends on the scope, but we can start most projects within two to four weeks.
Do you offer financing? Yes. We offer financing through Synchrony Bank, including 18 months of no-interest financing, and we have other financing options as well.
