About This Project

We replaced this family's old patio with a new raised paver patio and walkways, and built a freestanding cedar gazebo over a full outdoor kitchen and bar.

The project started as a pergola. During the build, the family decided they wanted a solid roof, so we upgraded it to a cedar gazebo.

The change of plan

Partway through, the homeowners decided to switch from a pergola to a gazebo. We changed the plan with them and kept the project on track.

Pergola or Gazebo? A General Guide

The difference

Merriam-Webster describes a pergola as posts and beams holding up an open roof of girders and cross rafters, so it filters the sun rather than blocking it completely. A gazebo has a solid roof. Merriam-Webster defines it as a roofed structure, usually freestanding and usually open on the sides.

How much sun a pergola blocks depends on how much open sky shows through its top; the Skin Cancer Foundation notes that the indirect UV reaching you in shade rises with the amount of open sky visible.

What changes when you add a roof

A solid roof gives full shade and keeps rain off furniture, an outdoor kitchen and electronics. It also changes what you can hang overhead. Outdoor fans carry location ratings: damp-rated fans are meant for covered spaces protected from direct rain, while wet-rated fans can handle direct rain, such as under an open pergola.

If you plan an outdoor TV, choose one rated for outdoor use and for the amount of sun the spot gets, and plan the power and network connections early.

Outdoor kitchens

NAHB lists outdoor kitchens and outdoor fireplaces among the home features that have grown most in popularity over the past ten years.

The National Electrical Code has required ground-fault (GFCI) protection on outdoor receptacles since the early 1970s, according to the CPSC. NFPA recommends keeping children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.

For any wood structure in Florida, UF/IFAS advises eliminating wood-to-ground contact, such as posts set directly in soil, to help reduce termite risk.

In-home design visit. Amany comes to your home for an in-person walkthrough, so we look at the project together where you're most comfortable, finalize the details and choose your colors and finishes.
Engineering, HOA and permits handled. We get the necessary engineered documents for every permitted structure, prepare your HOA/ARB package and pull the Clay County permits.
Build. We can start most projects within two to four weeks. Our crews follow a build process we've refined over many projects, and you get daily updates.
