Outdoor Wood Ceiling Installation in St. Johns, FL

Warm wood ceilings for St. Johns gazebos, lanais and patio extensions.

Look up in most builder lanais and you see plain soffit. A tongue-and-groove wood ceiling changes the whole room. We design wood ceilings for St. Johns outdoor rooms with the fans and lights laid out in the same plan.

Wood Ceilings for St. Johns Homes

  • Matched to your existing lanai. So the new and old ceilings read as one.

  • Fans and lights. Ceiling fans and dimmable lights planned in the ceiling layout.

  • Speakers in the ceiling. Wiring for speakers planned with the boards.

  • Flat or vaulted. A flat ceiling under a shed roof or a vaulted one under a gable.

Ceiling fans make a covered lanai more comfortable through a wind-chill effect, and ENERGY STAR notes they cool people, not rooms, so they're best switched off when no one is outside.

Before We Draw Your St. Johns Wood Ceiling

Communities like Durbin Crossing, Aberdeen and Stillwater have many homes on pond or preserve lots, where the view is the main event. Celestina, Cimarrone and Beachwalk are among the newer St. Johns communities, with homes whose builder lanais are ready to grow. Newer homes often have simple rooflines that are easy to tie into cleanly.

A vaulted wood ceiling under an A-frame roof makes the room feel taller and brighter. Before we draw a wood ceiling in St. Johns, we check the roof shape the ceiling follows, where the fans and lights go and the height under the roof.

For any wood structure in Florida, UF/IFAS advises eliminating wood-to-ground contact, such as posts set directly in soil, to help reduce termite risk.

Approvals and Permits in St. Johns

Most St. Johns neighborhoods are planned communities with their own architectural review, and many larger ones have village or sub-association rules on top of the master guidelines. Boards often ask about the structure the ceiling goes in, its height and colors. Confirm current guidelines with your association.

St. Johns County issues the permit, usually after a clearance sheet, and registered architectural review associations can be notified automatically. That's one reason we get HOA approval first. Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a wood ceiling cost in St. Johns? It depends on the design, so there's no standard price. The main cost drivers are fans and lighting; the area; the wood and stain; the structure it goes in; and permits for the structure. Every AY Luxury Designs project has a $10,000 minimum, and you get a fully itemized custom quote within 24 hours of your consultation.

Vaulted or flat wood ceiling?A vaulted ceiling follows an A-frame roof and feels taller; a flat ceiling suits a shed-style roof. We show both in AutoCAD.

Does a wood ceiling need a permit?A wood ceiling is usually part of a permitted roof structure, and we handle the permits with the structure.

Does my St. Johns HOA get notified about my permit? In many cases, yes. St. Johns County keeps a list of registered architectural review associations that are notified when a permit application for exterior construction is filed. That's one more reason we get your HOA approval first. Confirm current guidelines with your association.

Do I need HOA approval for a wood ceiling in St. Johns? In most cases, yes. From RiverTown to Stillwater, nearly every St. Johns community has an architectural review committee, and the bigger ones add village-level rules, so the submittal has to match the right set of guidelines. We prepare the site plan, scaled drawings and material and color selections and submit them with you. Confirm current guidelines with your association.
