Lighting a St. Johns County Backyard

  • Step and path lights. Light where people walk so the yard is safe after dark.

  • Ceiling lights. Recessed or ceiling lights in a gazebo, cover or A-frame.

  • Tree uplights. Uplights in the canopy add depth to the whole yard.

  • Planned with the AutoCAD design. Fixture locations shown in the design so nothing is an afterthought.

Designing an outdoor lighting design for St. Johns County

Most St. Johns County homes are in master-planned communities, so HOA review is part of nearly every project. Registered architectural review associations in St. Johns County are notified automatically when exterior work is filed. New-build backyards are often dark after sunset, so lighting is usually part of the first project.

We show the lighting plan in AutoCAD so you can see the effect before anything is wired. Before we draw an outdoor lighting design in St. Johns County, we check where the panel is and how far runs go, which trees or walls are worth lighting and whether wires can run before new pavers go down. The wiring is handled with our licensed electrical partner and inspected with the rest of the project.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, LEDs use at least 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last about 25 times longer.

Approvals and Permits in St. Johns County

St. Johns County's planned communities each publish their own guidelines, so the package is built for your community, not the county. Lighting is sometimes part of HOA review, usually for fixture style and light spilling toward neighbors. Confirm current guidelines with your association.

We file the clearance sheet and permit with St. Johns County, record the Notice of Commencement for most permitted projects and schedule the inspections. See our St. Johns County permit guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the price of an outdoor lighting design in St. Johns County set?We price each project from its AutoCAD design. New pavers or walls the wiring runs through; the number and type of fixtures; how many zones and controls; distance from the panel; and permits all move the number. Every AY Luxury Designs project has a $10,000 minimum, and the itemized quote arrives within 24 hours of your consultation.

Can you add lighting to a screen enclosure?Yes. We add lighting to screen enclosures and covered patios, with the wiring handled with our licensed electrical partner.

How do you avoid glare?Fixtures are aimed down and placed so you see the light, not the bulb. We show the plan in AutoCAD first.

Who permits projects in St. Johns County?Unincorporated St. Johns County permits most homes, after its clearance sheet. Homes inside the City of St. Augustine are permitted by the City.

Will my St. Johns County HOA review outdoor lighting or electrical work?In most cases, yes. In St. Johns County, the HOA and the county permit are separate steps, and registered associations are notified automatically when exterior work is filed. We put the package together and handle the submittal with you. Confirm current guidelines with your association.
