Pergola Builder in St. Augustine, FL

Custom pergolas for St. Augustine backyards, designed in person with you in AutoCAD and built and stained on site.

If your patio feels unfinished, a pergola is often the piece that pulls it together. It defines the dining or lounge area, softens the sun and gives you somewhere to hang lights and a fan. We design custom pergolas for homeowners in St. Augustine in AutoCAD with you, then build and stain them on site. Pond and preserve lots are common in St. Augustine's master-planned communities, so many designs frame the view instead of closing it in.

Ways to Build a Pergola in St. Augustine

  • Attached to the house. Extends from the lanai so shade starts right at the back door.
  • Freestanding in the yard. Creates a destination at the far end of the patio or the lawn.
  • Over the hot tub. Filtered shade and a little privacy right where you soak.
  • Swings and benches. A pergola swing or built-in bench turns shade into seating.

When planning an outdoor living space, UF/IFAS suggests a tree, umbrella or pergola for daytime shade.

Designing a Pergola for St. Augustine

Out west near I-95, communities like SilverLeaf, Shearwater and Trailmark have younger homes and open backyards ready for a first project. Near the ocean, wind and salt air are the first design question, so the structure is designed for the exposure and finished for the salt.

The most common pergola mistake is building it too small for the furniture. We lay out the table and chairs in the AutoCAD design first and size the rafters around them. Before we draw a pergola in St. Augustine, we check how the rafters line up with the back door and windows, whether the patio surface can take the posts and where wiring for lights or a fan will run.

Outdoor fans carry location ratings: damp-rated fans are meant for covered spaces protected from direct rain, while wet-rated fans can handle direct rain, such as under an open pergola.

St. Augustine HOA Review and Permits

Master-planned communities such as SilverLeaf, Shearwater, Markland and Palencia run their own architectural review, while many older and beach-side neighborhoods follow city or county rules only. Expect the board to ask about the pergola's height, its distance from the property lines and its color. Confirm current guidelines with your association.

Homes inside the City of St. Augustine's limits are permitted by the City. In the City's historic preservation zoning districts, most exterior work, including a new accessory structure, needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Architectural Review Board before a building permit can be issued. Outside city limits, unincorporated St. Johns County issues a clearance sheet before it accepts the permit application. Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the price of a pergola in St. Augustine set? We price each project from its AutoCAD design. A clear roof; lighting and fans; the patio underneath; the size and style; and engineering and permits all move the number. Every AY Luxury Designs project has a $10,000 minimum, and the itemized quote arrives within 24 hours of your consultation.

Can a pergola keep the rain off? Yes, with our clear roof option. Panels above the rafters shed rain while keeping the open, airy look of a pergola.

Can a pergola be stained to match my trim? Yes. We build in wood and stain on site, so the color can be matched to your home.

Do you work in Palencia? Yes. We've completed projects in Palencia, and we serve homeowners all across St. Augustine. Palencia has its own architectural review, so confirm current guidelines with your association.

Do I need HOA approval for a pergola in St. Augustine? In most cases, yes. Whether a St. Augustine project goes to an HOA board, the City's historic review or neither depends on the address, so we sort that out before we draw anything. Confirm current guidelines with your association.

Who permits a pergola in St. Augustine? We file with the City of St. Augustine inside city limits and St. Johns County outside them, depending on your address, track the permit and schedule the inspections. Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents.
