Matched to your existing lanai. So the new and old ceilings read as one.

Heaters overhead. Mounting and power for heaters planned in the layout.
Trim and beams. Beams and trim that frame the ceiling.
UF/IFAS notes that warm-white LEDs below about 3600K are harder for insects to see, while cooler-white bulbs attract more bugs.
What Shapes a wood ceiling in St. Augustine
St. Augustine homes run from salt-air lots on Vilano Beach and Anastasia Island to wooded preserve and pond lots in the newer communities west of town. Downtown, the City's historic districts protect the look of the street, so outdoor rooms there are designed to sit quietly behind the house. Facing water, the roof edge is set so the view starts right at the seating.
The ceiling is the largest surface in a covered outdoor room, so the stain color matters more than people expect. Before we draw a wood ceiling in St. Augustine, we check the roof shape the ceiling follows, how the stain matches the trim and the view from inside the house.
Daylighting research from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory notes that overhangs can reduce daylight reaching a room, while taller, sloped ceilings help spread light deeper, which is why roof height and shape matter on a lanai extension.
Approvals and Permits in St. Augustine
Master-planned communities such as SilverLeaf, Shearwater, Markland and Palencia run their own architectural review, while many older and beach-side neighborhoods follow city or county rules only. For a wood ceiling in a new structure, the board typically wants the elevations and colors. Confirm current guidelines with your association.
Homes inside the City of St. Augustine's limits are permitted by the City. In the City's historic preservation zoning districts, most exterior work, including a new accessory structure, needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Architectural Review Board before a building permit can be issued. Outside city limits, unincorporated St. Johns County issues a clearance sheet before it accepts the permit application. Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents.

Do I need historic review for a backyard project in St. Augustine?Only if your home is in one of the City of St. Augustine's historic preservation zoning districts.
