Pergolas and Outdoor Kitchens: A General Guide
What a pergola does
Merriam-Webster describes a pergola as posts and beams holding up an open roof of girders and cross rafters, so it filters the sun rather than blocking it completely.
UF/IFAS lists a tree, an umbrella or a pergola as ways to get daytime shade in an outdoor living space.
Planning an outdoor kitchen
When designing an outdoor living space, UF/IFAS suggests planning power for cooking and lighting early. Outdoor receptacles have required ground-fault (GFCI) protection under the National Electrical Code since the early 1970s, according to the CPSC.
A curved counter can follow a curved patio edge and makes it easier for people to face each other while someone cooks. NFPA recommends keeping children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.
Seating walls
A seating wall gives a patio built-in seating and a clear edge without adding furniture. Buyers want outdoor living: in NAHB's buyer study, exterior lighting (82%) and a front porch (81%) both made the list of most-wanted features, alongside a patio (86%).
Building in Nocatee
Del Webb Nocatee is a 55-and-over community inside Nocatee with its own architectural review. See our Nocatee page for HOA and permit details in the area.
For any wood structure in Florida, UF/IFAS advises eliminating wood-to-ground contact, such as posts set directly in soil, to help reduce termite risk.
