Hurricane-Ready Outdoor Structures
How outdoor structures are designed for Florida storms, and what that means for you.
In Northeast Florida, every outdoor structure has to stand up to storm season. That doesn't come from a product label; it comes from proper design, engineering, permits and inspections.

What 'Hurricane-Ready' Really Means
- Designed to code. Florida's building code sets wind requirements based on your exact location.
- Engineered documents. Every permitted structure gets its necessary engineered documents.
- Permitted and inspected. Inspections confirm the structure was built to the approved plans.
- Built for the exposure. Coastal and open lots need extra care in design and finishes.
- Before a storm. Secure furniture, retract what can be retracted, and follow local guidance.
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with the peak around September 10, according to NOAA.
The Florida Building Code uses the national ASCE 7 wind standard, so design wind speeds vary by location, and areas designated wind-borne debris regions carry added requirements. Permitted structures are designed to Florida Building Code wind requirements.

A-frame cedar gazebo with linear gas fire feature and outdoor kitchen, Jacksonville Beach We turned this home's original gable-roof lanai into a full A-frame by over-framing a new A-frame that ties straight into it, finished in white outside to match the house, with new posts that match the existing ones. Inside, a stained tongue-and-groove ceiling with dimmable lights and a ridge fan tops the space. A linear gas fireplace with lights under the caps, a reclaimed-wood mantel and a TV above sits between two privacy walls, and a matching outdoor kitchen with a second TV sits under the original lanai.
