Project Overview

What began as a standard screen enclosure was completely reimagined into a luxurious, architecturally stunning outdoor living space. Designed and built by AY Luxury Designs, this custom cedar A-frame patio extension transforms the home’s exterior into a seamless indoor-outdoor retreat—equal parts craftsmanship, comfort, and sophistication.

The homeowner’s original screened patio was carefully removed to make way for an extended A-frame structure constructed from rich cedar, complete with exposed rafters and a tongue-and-groove ceiling. The design intentionally leaves the rafters visible for an elevated architectural effect, while the warm bark-mulch tone of the wood creates a refined, natural aesthetic. The tongue-and-groove panels run in a vertical direction from the original lanai through the new extension, giving the entire space a sense of length and continuity.

Each post was custom built with cement Hardie board, trimmed and painted to match the home’s existing color palette. The front header features a signature curved design—a detail that softens the bold A-frame lines and introduces a sense of craftsmanship that’s uniquely AY Luxury Designs. Matching rafters, posts, and headers in a uniform color palette ensure every architectural element feels cohesive, while the ceiling’s darker wood tone adds warmth and contrast.

On the right-hand side, the space transitions into a half-and-half design—a custom expanded-view screen enclosure that provides an unobstructed panoramic view of the backyard and surrounding landscape. Engineered with a 2x10 header and zero vertical posts, this screen system delivers the ultimate in open-air luxury while maintaining durability and insect protection. To achieve a clean, designer look, the entire enclosure was face-framed to conceal all aluminum from the interior view.

Accessibility and flow were essential to the design. A four-foot door on the left side opens to a secondary patio space finished in matching pavers, creating a continuous visual surface that blurs the line between the interior and exterior zones. This outdoor extension includes a custom seating wall with two Roma columns, ideal for entertaining or casual relaxation. The wall is complemented by low-voltage lighting integrated into the pavers and columns, casting an inviting ambient glow at night.

To enhance both function and atmosphere, can lighting was installed in the A-frame ceiling, paired with powered posts for flexible use of fans or decor. Custom rafter tail designs extend across both the cedar A-frame and the adjoining trellis above the outdoor kitchen, ensuring the project feels unified from every angle. Finally, gutter systems were seamlessly tied into the home and new patio extension for long-term durability and performance.

From the natural beauty of cedar and the precision of the exposed framing to the panoramic screen enclosure and low-voltage lighting, every inch of this build was crafted for comfort, longevity, and timeless appeal.
